Biography

JONATHAN WOODMAN, b. at Andover, 1 Apr 1674[1] son of Joshua Woodman and Elizabeth Stevens ; d. at Bradford, MA, 14 Feb 1743/4;[2] m. at Newbury, 5 Jun 1700,[3][4] SARAH MIGHILL, b. at Rowley, 23 Oct 1681[5] daughter of Stephen and Sarah (Phillips) Mighill; Sarah d. at Bradford, 16 Mar 1772.[6]

Jonathan Woodman was a farmer in Bradford. He served as deacon of the church from 1728 until his death and selectman of Bradford in 1726. He served as representative from Bradford to the Massachusetts General Court in five terms from 1722 to 1731.[7]

Probate

In his will written 11 February 1743 (probate 12 March 1743/4), Capt. Jonathan Woodman bequeathed to Sarah “my dear and well beloved wife” all the stock of cattle, horses, sheep, and swine to be hers forever as well as the indoor movables. She also receives use of all the dwelling house and lands during her natural life. Beloved son Stephen receives all the land on the southerly side of the road leading from Bradford to Boxford. Beloved son Jonathan receives five shillings new tenor with what he has received by deed is his full share. Beloved grandson Nathaniel Woodman son Nathaniel late of Haverhill deceased receives lands and Andover which descend to Jonathan from his uncle Benjamin Stevens of Andover deceased. Nathaniel also receives £20 new tenor. Remaining lands are to be divided between his sons Samuel and Jonathan. Beloved daughter Elisabeth wife of Stephen Mighill receives twenty shillings in old tenor. Well-beloved daughters Sarah and Mary each receives £50 in bills of credit to be paid to them by sons Stephen, Jonathan, and Samuel. Daughter Mary will receive her legacy at age twenty-one or at marriage. Sons Stephen, Jonathan, and Samuel receive all the salt marsh. Sons Jonathan and Samuel were named executors. Real estate was valued at £380.10 with total estate value of £463.4.6.[8]

Jonathan and Sarah were parents of twelve children, the first two children at Rowley and the remainder at Bradford, Massachusetts.

Stephen m. 3rd at Bradford, 12 May 1737, ELIZABETH POOR, b. at Andover, Aug 1711 daughter of Daniel and Mehitable (Osgood) Poor; Elizabeth d. at Bradford, 22 Oct 1779.

vi ELIZABETH WOODMAN, b. 29 Jul 1713; d. at Rowley, 6 Jul 1781; m. at Bradford, 22 Oct 1735, STEPHEN MIGHILL, b. at Rowley, 4 Dec 1707 son of Nathaniel and Priscilla (Pearson) Mighill; Stephen d. at Rowley, 20 Jul 1783. Stephen married second widow Mehitable Kimball on 26 Mar 1783.

vii JONATHAN WOODMAN, b. 27 Apr 1715; d. at Bradford, 7 Sep 1746; m. at Bradford, 19 Feb 1740, MARY KIMBALL, b. at Bradford, 11 Apr 1719 daughter of Richard and Mary (Stickney) Kimball;[14] Mary was living in 1776. Mary married second Job Runnels on 5 Oct 1758. Job Runnels died in 1776 and it is possible that Mary married Ebenezer Kelley on 11 Jan 1777.
