  • The surname Tuthill is spelled also Totyl, Totehill, and Tuttle, and is derived from tot-hill, a mound. Blomefield, the historian of Norfolk, has written of several tumuli near Thetford, Norfolk, England, the largest of which is called tut-hill. These were doubtless raised by the Danes to cover their dead after the battle with King Edmund, A. D. 871. The arms of the Norfolk family are : Or. on a chevron azure, three crescents argent. Crest : A leopard passant, sable, crowned or, on a mound vert. The arms are on the tomb of Elizabeth, wife of Sir Roger Dalyson, and daughter of William Tuthill, in Trowse-with- Newton, Norfolkshire. England ; she died September 27, 1585. aged eighteen. She was granddaughter of John Tuthill, of Saxlingham, father of Henry, mentioned below.
  • (I) Henry, son of John Tuthill, was born in 1580. He lived in Tharston, county Norfolk, England. He married Alice Cooch. His will, dated March 20, 1618, proved April 20, 1619, in England, mentions his father, John Gooch, Margaret Rau, mother-in-law, Ann Woodyard, a relative, John, a brother, wife Alice, and children. He was buried March 26, 1618. Children, baptismal dates: John, October 25, 1607; William, October 29, 1609; Henry, mentioned below; Alice, September 24, 1614; Elizabeth, March 9, 1616.
  • (II) Henry (2), son of Henry (1) Tuthill, was baptized June 28, 1612, in Tharston, England. He married, in England, Bridget —— , who came with him to America, and married (second) William Wells, Gentleman, of Southold, New York. Henry Tuthill settled in Hingham, Massachusetts. He had a planting lot at Broad Cove in 1635. and a house lot in 1637. Cushing says that he came from Norfolkshire to New Hingham in 1637. He was made freeman in March, 1638, and was constable in 1640. June 20, 1638, he sold his lot in Hingham and moved doubtless to Southold. He died before 1650, and his wife also died before 1650. Children: John, mentioned below; Elizabeth; Nathaniel; Daniel (probably) baptized in Hingham, Massachusetts, August 30, 1640.
  • (III) John, son of Henry (2) Tuthill, was born July 16, 1635, and died at Southold, New York, October 12, 1717. He married there (first), Febuary 17, 1657. Deliverance, daughter of William and Dorothy (Hayne?) Kinge ; she was baptized at Salem, Massachusetts, August 31, 1641, and died at Southold, January 25, 1688-89, aged forty-nine years. He married (second), May 28, 1690, Sarah, probably widow of Thomas Young, and daughter of John Frost ; she died November 8, 1727. He owned much land at Southold. Children by first wife : John, mentioned below ; Elizabeth, born April 19, 1661; Henry, May 1, 1665; Hannah, November 7, 1667; Abigail. October 17, 1670; Dorothy, October 16, 1673, died February 24, 1674; Deliverance, August 2, 1677, died September 17, 1683; Daniel, January 23, 1679; Nathaniel, November 10, 1683; daughter of second wife: Mary, died January 11, 1698-99, aged about eight years.

  • 5. Jacob2 Corey (John1), of Southold, d. 15 Feb., 1706. A list of Jacob's lands will be found in the Town Records. He was Overseer, and Patentee of Southold, in 1676. He was worth L92 in 1683, while three years later his household was composed of two males and five females.
  • Griffin in his Journal names Jacob Corey in his list of the thirteen earliest settlers of Southold. This oft-quoted list is not supported by any documentary evidence whatsoever, as has been ably shown by the late Mr. J. Wickham Case, and also by Dr. Epher Whitaker, in his History of Southold. The will of John Corey first, mentioned above, is proof that Jacob was of the second Corey generation.
  • He married, as early as 1672, Ann (Tuthill?), who died on the 11 April, 1739. Issue, named in the order given in the Census of 1698: ...

  • ii. Abijah (probably). An Abijah Corey, probably of a later generation, m. Mary, da. of Stephen and Mehitable (Tuthill) Bailey, in Jan., 1792.

  • The entry of Margaret Corey's marriage in the King Family Record seems to indicate that she was a near relative, perhaps a sister, of Mary Corey who married Ensign John King ; it is also a suggestive fact that this John King had a great-grandson Lynde King, b. 6 July, 1792 ; his gravestone at Orient reads : " Capt. Lyndes King, died Oct. 18, 1854, aged 62 years and 3 months." He was the son of Nathaniel King, Jr., whose wife was Mehitable Tuthill, and grandson of Major Nathaniel King whose wife was Experience Young.

  • Tuthill.— Abigail Tuthill, da. of John and Deliverance (King) Tuthill, b. 17 Oct 1670, d. 6 June, 1705, wife of John Parker. Abigail's first husband was Joseph,3 son of Capt. John2 Concklyne (John1 ). Was Abigail Tuthill the mother of Abigail Parker, wife of Joseph Wickham? L. D. A.

  • Capt. William Booth was a mariner. He owned the present site of Greenport, L. I., then called Stirling, which he purchased of John Youngs. The original deed is still owned by his descendants at Greenport. He m. in 1688, Hannah,3 da. of Samuel2 and Frances (Ludlam) King, b. 26 Jan., 1666; who d. 22 Dec, 1742. (Records of the King Family of Southold, Suffolk Co., N. Y., N. Y. Gen. and Biog. Rec, Apl., 1901; Ludlam Gen.) Issue:
    • William,3 b. 28 May, 1689; d. 22 July, 1712.
    • Hannah, b. 22 Feb., 1691; m. in all probability, Henry Tuthill, b. 1690. If so, she d. 1 Dec, 1715, leaving a son Henry Tuthill, ancestor of the late President, Benjamin Harrison. It is possible, however, that this Hannah Booth m. Rich. Hudson in Jan., 1723. ...
    • Mary, b. 27 Aug., 1703; she probably m. on 4 Oct., 1721-2 Jonathan Bradley, probably son of Christopher Bradley, of New London, Conn., and grandson of Mary Christophers, who m. successively Peter Bradley, Lieut. Col. Thomas Youngs, and Nathaniel Lynde. (Tombstone of Mary Lynde at Southold.)
    • Jonathan Bradley's wife d. in 1738. His will dated 31 July, 1739, proved 23 Nov., the same year, names his children: Peter, Grant, Mary, Mehitable, Hannah, and Martha. Grant is to be given a child's coat the gift of Mr. Sueton Grant. Lieut. Constant Booth brother-in-law, and Daniel Tuthill, brother of the testator are to be executors. (Lib. 13, p. 358, N. Y. Wills.)* ...
    • * It has been conjectured that Peter Bradley, whose widow, Mehitable Horton, m. Daniel Tuthill, was brother of Jonathan Bradley above, as there seems to be no other way in which to account for Daniel Tuthill being called "brother" of Jonathan Bradley. _____________
