He sold his lot in Hingham 20 June, 1644, and doubtless came to Southold. Savage states that both Henry and Bridget died before 1650. Children:

  • The surname Tuthill is spelled also Totyl, Totehill, and Tuttle, and is derived from tot-hill, a mound. Blomefield, the historian of Norfolk, has written of several tumuli near Thetford, Norfolk, England, the largest of which is called tut-hill. These were doubtless raised by the Danes to cover their dead after the battle with King Edmund, A. D. 871. The arms of the Norfolk family are : Or. on a chevron azure, three crescents argent. Crest : A leopard passant, sable, crowned or, on a mound vert. The arms are on the tomb of Elizabeth, wife of Sir Roger Dalyson, and daughter of William Tuthill, in Trowse-with- Newton, Norfolkshire. England ; she died September 27, 1585. aged eighteen. She was granddaughter of John Tuthill, of Saxlingham, father of Henry, mentioned below.
  • (I) Henry, son of John Tuthill, was born in 1580. He lived in Tharston, county Norfolk, England. He married Alice Cooch. His will, dated March 20, 1618, proved April 20, 1619, in England, mentions his father, John Gooch, Margaret Rau, mother-in-law, Ann Woodyard, a relative, John, a brother, wife Alice, and children. He was buried March 26, 1618. Children, baptismal dates: John, October 25, 1607; William, October 29, 1609; Henry, mentioned below; Alice, September 24, 1614; Elizabeth, March 9, 1616.
  • (II) Henry (2), son of Henry (1) Tuthill, was baptized June 28, 1612, in Tharston, England. He married, in England, Bridget
, who came with him to America, and married (second) William Wells, Gentleman, of Southold, New York. Henry Tuthill settled in Hingham, Massachusetts. He had a planting lot at Broad Cove in 1635. and a house lot in 1637. Cushing says that he came from Norfolkshire to New Hingham in 1637. He was made freeman in March, 1638, and was constable in 1640. June 20, 1638, he sold his lot in Hingham and moved doubtless to Southold. He died before 1650, and his wife also died before 1650. Children: John, mentioned below; Elizabeth; Nathaniel; Daniel (probably) baptized in Hingham, Massachusetts, August 30, 1640.
  • (III) John, son of Henry (2) Tuthill, was born July 16, 1635, and died at Southold, New York, October 12, 1717. He married there (first), Febuary 17, 1657. Deliverance, daughter of William and Dorothy (Hayne?) Kinge ; she was baptized at Salem, Massachusetts, August 31, 1641, and died at Southold, January 25, 1688-89, aged forty-nine years. He married (second), May 28, 1690, Sarah, probably widow of Thomas Young, and daughter of John Frost ; she died November 8, 1727. He owned much land at Southold. Children by first wife : John, mentioned below ; Elizabeth, born April 19, 1661; Henry, May 1, 1665; Hannah, November 7, 1667; Abigail. October 17, 1670; Dorothy, October 16, 1673, died February 24, 1674; Deliverance, August 2, 1677, died September 17, 1683; Daniel, January 23, 1679; Nathaniel, November 10, 1683; daughter of second wife: Mary, died January 11, 1698-99, aged about eight years.
  • (IV) John (2), son of John (1) Tuthill, was born February 14, 1658, at Southold, and died November 21, 1754. He was a landowner at Southold Town. He was a justice of the peace, a commissioner to lay out the King's highway, the first public road from Brooklyn to Easthampton, a member of the

Children, perhaps not in order of birth: John, born in 1683; James, mentioned below; Mary, born 1687; Joshua, 1690 ; Dorothy, perhaps in 1692 ; Daniel ; Freegift, mentioned below ; Hannah, perhaps, for either she or her niece Hannah, daughter of John Tuthill, married Noah Tuthill in 1738.
  • (V) Freegift, son of John (2) Tuthill, was born in Southold Town, August 8, 1698, died in Goshen, New York, September, 1765. He married in June, 1727, Abigail Goldsmith. His will is recorded in Albany, and also in New York City. He lived in Brookhaven, Long Island, and in the precinct of New Windsor, New York. Children : Abigail ; Nathaniel, born in Brookhaven, January 17, 1730; Joshua; Freegift.

  • 5. Jacob2 Corey (John1), of Southold, d. 15 Feb., 1706. A list of Jacob's lands will be found in the Town Records. He was Overseer, and Patentee of Southold, in 1676. He was worth L92 in 1683, while three years later his household was composed of two males and five females.
  • Griffin in his Journal names Jacob Corey in his list of the thirteen earliest settlers of Southold. This oft-quoted list is not supported by any documentary evidence whatsoever, as has been ably shown by the late Mr. J. Wickham Case, and also by Dr. Epher Whitaker, in his History of Southold. The will of John Corey first, mentioned above, is proof that Jacob was of the second Corey generation.

  • The entry of Margaret Corey's marriage in the King Family Record seems to indicate that she was a near relative, perhaps a sister, of Mary Corey who married Ensign John King ; it is also a suggestive fact that this John King had a great-grandson Lynde King, b. 6 July, 1792 ; his gravestone at Orient reads : " Capt. Lyndes King, died Oct. 18, 1854, aged 62 years and 3 months." He was the son of Nathaniel King, Jr., whose wife was Mehitable Tuthill, and grandson of Major Nathaniel King whose wife was Experience Young.

    • Jonathan Bradley's wife d. in 1738. His will dated 31 July, 1739, proved 23 Nov., the same year, names his children: Peter, Grant, Mary, Mehitable, Hannah, and Martha. Grant is to be given a child's coat the gift of Mr. Sueton Grant. Lieut. Constant Booth brother-in-law, and Daniel Tuthill, brother of the testator are to be executors. (Lib. 13, p. 358, N. Y. • * It has been conjectured that Peter Bradley, whose widow, Mehitable Horton, m. Daniel Tuthill, was brother of Jonathan Bradley above, as there seems to be no other way in which to account for Daniel Tuthill being called "brother" of Jonathan Bradley. _______________

[Br%C3%B8derbund WFT Vol. 3, Ed. 1, Tree #2258, Date of Import: May 2, 1999]

From Southold Town (Long Island, N.Y.) Records copied and explanatory notes added by J. Wickham Case. Printed by Order of the Towns of Southold and Riverhead. 1882. Volume 1, Liber A, Pages 49 - 51. Page 20 of Original Record.

January 6th 1658. John Tuthills whom lott ffower acres more or lesse, the Land of Richard Benjamin Southeast and Samuel King Southwest.*

  • Explanatory notes added by J. Wickham Case.
  • This home lot--the first one occupied by John Tuthill in Southold, so far as we have any data--was on the corner where the Universalist Church now stands, and embraced the homestead of M. C. Cleveland as far Easterly as "John Tuthill's lane," and also a part, at least, of the lot of A. Irwin Booth.--A, Page 59. He bought this lot, as he states--A--20--of George Miller on the 19th Feb. 1656, when he was not quite 21 years old. The next year, 1757, he married Deliverance King. She was the sister of Samuel King; and his home lot adjoined Tuthill's on the West. In 1660 John Tuthill sold the above-named home lot to Joseph Sutton, shoemaker of Southhampton, and in 1661 he purchased the home lot of John Baylis at the South end of the Town Street, originally Thomas Scudder's lot. In 1665 he sold this lot to Doct. Robert Trusteane, who failed to fulil the contract stipulations. and in 1667 Tuthill again sold the place to Jacob Corey. From these papers and dates, and from the papers and dates of Richard Brown and of Samuel King, as found of record, we infer, notwithstanding the statements of Mr. Thompson, and the traditions of Mr. Griffin, that John Tuthill went to Oysterponds not sooner than 1658 to 1660. It will be remembered that "the John Tuthill" of whom we are writing was not the "Pilgrim John of Yennicott," who was appointed by the Court at New Haven in 1642 to be "Constable to order the affayrs of that plantacio." "Pilgrim John" was, as Mr. C. B. Moore suggests, the uncle of that John who settled at Oysterponds, and who was the John Tuthill referred to in the release made to William Wells in A, p. 105, Town Records. "Pilgrim John", named as above, and once again, Dodd's Register, had no home lot assigned to him, owned no lands, and was probably only a temporary sojourner in Southold; where he lived, and when he died, we have no knowledge. The late Judge William H. Tuthill statesin his able address at the Tuthill family gathering at Cutchogue in 1867, that after diligent research he was unable to gather any facts in relation to his history. As a further identification of this 1st Oysterpond John Tuthill, we find under the record of his home lot, on the same page (A 20) a continuous list of all the lands of John Tuthill, beginning in 1656, and ending about the year of his death 1717. That this Oysterpond 1st John Tuthill was not a contemporary of Pastor Youngs, nor one of his original church or Colony, as is generally asserted and believed, may be considered an established fact: he was but five years old at the time of the settlement; and that he was not the son of John Tuthill the pilgrim--who is supposed by some to have come with Pastor Youngs--but the son of Henry Tuthill, is now admitted by all. He married a second wife, Sarah Young, in 1690, by whom he had a daughter who died young. He was a man of great enterprise, energy, and will; controlled and guided by strong common sense, honesty of purpose, and religious principle. No man had, perhaps, to so great an extent the confidence of the community, as the record trusts of Richard Brown, Abraham Whitehere and others bear ample testimony. Many parcels of land in Oysterponds and Southold, at Corchaug and Occabauk, stand in his name upon the Town Records. He was a trusty public officer and a worthy private citizen. He died 12 Octo. 1717, ae 82, leaving four sons and five daughters, of whom we have ample genealogical and historical details.--J. W. C.

----------------------------------------------
same records as above, Volume II, Page 146 - 146 Note.--(by J. Wickham Case)--John Tuthill, Sen., son of Henry, is the first Tuthill of whom we have any knowledge as a settler and land-owner in Southold. He bought the home lot of George Miller in Feb. 1656. He was then 21 years old. His mother Bridget, widow of Henry, was probably living here about 1650, and her children, John and his sister Elizabeth, minors with her. The mother Bridget married 1st William Wells, 1650 to 1653. John, Sen., in 1657 married Deliverance King, a sister of Samuel, who after living next door to his brother-in-law John, in Southold, moved to Oysterponds and settled by the side of his friend. Of the father of John Senr's wife (said to be John) I can find no reliable data. That he was a man of broad and liberal views is shown in the general management and settlement of his children. He had had the judgement and good sense to satisfy and please, while at the same time ruled very decisively. He provided good homes for his sons as they severally married; and here we find these recorded instruments, executed in 1690, when he was only 55 years old, dividing and sharing with his sons a large part of his estate. He made no will, but instead, without doubt, drew up these papers with his own hand, when in the prime of life, and so made his family comfortable and respected. He was never accused of any lack of duty or zeal in church matters, but was a puritan pure, without much outward demonstration. He and his son Chalker John, were both men of mark in their day. John, Sen., died in 1717, leaving sons, John, Henry, Daniel, and Nathaniel. For further particulars of his history, see PRINTED TOWN RECORDS, Vol. I., p. 49---J. W. C.
