Married

He was a direct descendant of Joseph Tayntor (or Taynter), who was the pilgrim forefather of the Tainters in America. Joseph Tainter -which spelling of the family name we shall now follow- embarked for New England at the age of 25 years on the good ship Confidence, which left Southampton, England, April 24, 1638. He came to America in the service of one Nicholas Guy, and soon after his arrival was married in Watertown to Mary Guy, the daughter of his patron. The records show that he was active and prominent among the colonists in that town, for many years-between 1640 and 1680--serving in one office or another, as selectman, constable, etc. The direct line of descent to the subject of this sketch is: Joseph, Simon, Simon second (a deacon), Simon third, Abijah, Stephen (a physician), his son Ezekiel, and his grandson Captain Andrew Tainter.

LOCAL NEWSPAPER. PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, WIS.FEBRUARY 17, 1871DEATH OF EZEKIEL TAINTERAfter suffering a lond and painful illness, Ezekiel Tainter, Esq., the father of Andrew Tainter of Menominee, Dunn County in this State departed life at this place on the 4th inst.Mr. Tainter was born at Shelburne, Mass. in 1793, and was therefore, at the time of his death, 78 years of age and undoubtedly the oldest pioneer in this State, having come to Wisconsin in 1828, He was one of the men who helped build Fort Crawford at this place, and though he lived long enough to see the massive stone walls of the Fort crumble away and disappear, he has also lived to see a wild desolate and unknown region inhabited by the Indian only, except at a few French trading post, became a thickly settled, wealthy and might State of the Union, with a population of over, 1,000,000.Mr. Tainter at the time of his coming West was a Deacon in the Presbyterian church, but afterwards joined the Methodist Church, and was at all times a sincere and constant Christian. He was one of those active, strong, stirring, enterprising men, such men as were required to lay the foundations of a new State, and many of our old residents remember with pleasure "Uncle Zeek" as he "rushed around," in the capacity of Government contractor, hotel, keeper, store-keeper, sheriff and farmer, all in one, and to use his own expresion, "never letting the grass grow under his feet;" and they also remember that his word was as good as his bond; that honesty with him was a necessity,His many friends and acquaintances will be pleased to learn that he retined the full faculties of his mind to the last moment, calling each of his family by name as they stood by his bedside, and that he died with a prayer upon his lips. Thus departs one by one the old landmarks of early days.

Written by missionary Rev. J.D. Stevens at Dakota Mission at Lake Harriet (now in Minneapolis) June 2 1836 to the Am. Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions home office in Boston ... "I received a Donation of a small box of Eggs and another of dried apples late last fall from Mr. Ezekiel Tainter of Prairie du Chien (not estimated) also another small box of eggs this spring and a box of candles (Not estimated) also two Cows, one a Milch cow, the other dry, to be worth $45. If the Herald is not already taken by Brother Tainter, I hope it will be forwarded to him. He appears to be friendly to the cause of Missions."

J.D. Stevens and his family had stayed in the spring of 1835 at Prairie du Chien until they could get passage on a steamboat north to Fort Snelling. They were newly arrived in the frontier country, having taken the Fox-Wisconsin route from the Stockbridge mission at Statesburgh, Wisc (Green Bay). "Not estimated" means there is no dollar value to be printed in the organization's Missionary Herald magazine when donation is acknowledged.] from American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions transcribed correspondence at Minn.
