Biography

Ezekiel Woodward, son of Ezekiel Woodward and Hannah Perkins, was probably born in Gloucester or Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts,[1] about 1697, as he was aged 74 on his date of death.[2]

Step-siblings, Elizabeth Davis and Ezekiel Woodward, were married on 30 Nov 1720 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.[3][4] It's likely their intentions to marry were published on 30 Apr 1719 in Gloucester.[5]

The children of Ezekiel and Elizabeth, all born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, were:[1]

Elisabeth, b.Feb. 1, 1723/4,[6] d.4 Apr 1730, a.4y.1m.;[7]
Ezekiel, b.May 29, 1726,[6] d.Apr. 3, 1729, age 2y. 2m.;[7]
Elizabeth bp.1 Feb 1729/30,[6] d.1793, m1.Philemon Warner 1748, m2.Nathaniel Harraden 1772;[1]
Ezekiel (Ezekiel IV), b.Oct. 3, 1731,[6] d.2 Sep 1766, aged 35y., m.Abigail Sanders;[7]
Nathaniel, b. or bp. 29 Oct or 20 Nov 1732,[6] d.Dec. 23, 1732;[7]
Mary, b.Feb. 10, 1734/5,[6] d.Mar. 8, 1735, age 3w. 5d.;[7]
Mary, b.Jul 9, 1736,[6] no further record;
Davis, b.Sept. 22, 1738,[6] d.aft.1767, m.Lucretia Haskell;
Moses, b.Mar. 21, 1739/40,[6] d.aft.1769, m.Eunice;
Nathaniel, b.July 24, 1741,[6] d.Aug. 9, 1741, age 16d.[7]

The family removed to and settled at Gloucester Harbor about 1738 and carried on a fishing business; Ezekiel also was a deacon of the First Church for several years, serving as early as 1762 and continuing through his life.[1]

Elizabeth died on 1 Oct 1766 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.[1][7] Ezekiel married as his second wife, Ruth Riggs Wellman, widow of Adam Wellman, on 18 Mar 1767 at Gloucester, Massachusetts.[1][8]

Ezekiel died on 4 Sep 1771 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts[1][7][9] and is buried in the First Parish Burial Ground Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts.[2]

Ezekiel's will was recorded at Gloucester, Massachusetts on 23 Sep 1771.[10][11]

John Babson discusses the early Woodwards in Gloucester Massachusetts:[4]:

"Ezekiel Woodward has the birth of a child recorded here in 1702; but did not become a landholder till 1707, when he bought a messuage (a dwelling house with outbuildings and common-land assigned to its use) and 100 acres of land, at Little River, of Jacob Davis. Though there were several persons of the name of Woodward, early residents in Massachusetts, it is reasonable to suppose that this Ezekiel was the son of Ezekiel who bought a house and lot in Ipswich in 1661, and who had a son of the same name born there in 1666. Ezekiel of Gloucester had several children by his wife Hannah, who died Feb. 2, 1719, aged forty-eight. He next married Mary Davis, April 15, 1719; who died, Nov.1, 1721, of small-pox, aged fifty-three. It appears that he was thrice married after the death of the last-named wife: to Rachel Haskell, June 22, 1722; to Anna Low of Ipswich, April 13, 1732; and to the Widow Rebekah Bennet, Nov. 24, 1740. He died Jan. 16, 1743.

"His sons Ezekiel and Beamsley married in town; the former to Elizabeth Davis, November 30, 1720. He settled at the Harbor about 1738, and carried on the fishing business. He was a deacon of the First Church several years, and otherwise a prominent citizen. He was living 1761. He had nine children; of whom Ezekiel, the oldest son, married Abigail Sanders, and had several children. She became a widow before 1770, when she married Rev. John Rogers. Moses and Davis, two other sons of Deacon Woodward, married, and removed from town."
