About Deacon John Oakes

John was the son of Nathan Oakes and Amy Wyman Buckman.

Deacon Oakes was known as the man with 24 children. He is reported to have had 153 grandchildren. He was deacon and founding member of the Temple Congregational Church. A house he built still stands in Temple.

John is most likely buried in Staples Cemetery aka Potato Hill Cemetery. His second wife was Susannah Staples. His daughter Sarah married Gideon Staples, Susannah's brother, and they buried here. John's daughter Abigail married Nathaniel Staples, sibling of Susannah and Gideon. There are over a half-dozen stones that have decomposed on the right side of the cemetery near his daughter Sarah Oakes Staples and her husband Gideon Staples. Two of these are presumed to be the stones of John and his 2nd wife Susannah Staples.
