About Deacon John Stone

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/21016416/john-stone
His wife was Ann, probably (according to most recent information from NEHGS and The American Genealogist 71:86), the Anne Rogers, baptized 14 May 1615 at Boxted, Co.Essex, who was the daughter of Barnaby Rogers and Mary Wells Rogers of Boxted. NOTE: Very old genealogies indicate he married Anne Howe. New research has debunked that theory.

John was baptized in Nayland, Co.Suffolk 31 July 1618, the son of Gregory Stone and his first wife, Margaret Garrad Stone.

Children: Hannah Stone Bent, John Stone Jr, Daniel Stone, David Stone, Mary Stone Hunt Fox, Elizabeth Stone Stow, Margaret Stone Brown Foster, Tabitha Stone Rice, Sarah Stone Hill Jones, and Nathaniel Stone.

The question of Elder John Stone’s spouse has been around for over a century. At the end of my note I try to give the case for Ann Treadway.

The trouble stems from the will of Edward Howe (1587-1644), which names Nathaniel Treadway and Anne Stone as legatees. Unfortunately there are two Edward Howes and two Nathaniel Treadways. Some accounts have the wife of John Stone to be Anne Howe, sister-in-law of Nathaniel Treadway (1605-1689) (see link #3 below). But according to “The Genealogy of Gregory Stone, ancestors and descendants”, Nathaniel’s wife was Sufferance Haynes (1618-1682), who had no sister Anne. And this Edward Howe left no children. (see link #2).

My best guess is shown in the tree of ref.#1: Nathaniel Treadway II (1605-1689) and Ann Stone were siblings, children of Nathaniel I (1585-1630) and Mary Howe (1592-), dtr. of Edward Howe I, (1561-1591) and Margaret Wells (1599-1660), who were the parents of the aforesaid Edward Howe with the will.

According to link #4, Ann Rogers was the dtr. of Mary Wells, sister of the aforesaid Margaret . Edward Howe II would have been the natural uncle of the Treadways, but only an uncle by marriage of Ann Rogers. On two trees I have looked at, Ann Rogers and Ann Treadway have the same b-d dates. Must be from a record of Ann Stone, whoever she may have been.

I have no clue how Ann Sparhawk (Sparrowhawk) fits it. She was the dtr. of Nathaniel, a prominent man, and married John Cooper, son of Lydia, Widow Cooper , 2nd wife of Gregory Stone. Persis Dunham existed, but she was the dtr. of Dea. John Dunham of Plymouth, and married a Pratt, followed by a Sharp, but no Stone.
