Biography

John Throop and Rebecca Smith were married 25 November, 1697 in Bristol, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay Colony.<ref>Rhode Island Vital Records, 1636-1850 - Town and Church Records (V.1-V.12). (Online database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2014), Originally Published as: Vital record of Rhode Island 1636-1850: First Series: births, marriages and deaths: a family register forthe people, by James N. Arnold. Providence, RI: Narragansett Historical Publishing Company. Volume: Bristol County-V6, page 1-52.</ref>

Their children, all born in Bristol, were:<ref>Ibid., page 1-106</ref>

  • John, born 24 January 1698
  • Ann, born 27 December 1699
  • Amos, born 28 March 1702
  • Mary, born 9 September 1704
  • Hester, born 31 December 1706*Lydia, born 15 March 1713/4, "of Deacon John [Troop] and Rebecca"<ref>Ibid., page 1-107</ref>
  • John, born 27 May 1716, Ditto
  • Ebenezer, born 15 November 1718, Ditto I find no record of early death for John born in 1698, so I don't understand the second John in 1716. Not impossible, but seems odd to have two living child with the same name. John's Wife, Rebecca, died 19 December 1731.<ref>Ibid., p. 1-166</ref>The record reads "Rebecca, of Deacon John, Dec. 19, 1731." The transcriptionist interpreted this to mean a daughter of John died. However, since no daughter Rebecca is shown in the birth record AND John remarried the following year, the most plausible explanation is that it was Rebecca his wife who died, and the original record omitted the word "wife" by mistake. "Deacon John of Bristol and Mrs. Susannah [Sturges] Taylor of Barnworth (Int[ention]%29 Oct[ober] 9, 1732.<ref>Rhode Island Vital Records,V6, page 1-52.</ref> Additionally, the marriage of "Mr. John Troup and Mis Susanah Taylor" was published in Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts Bay Colony on September 9, 1732. No children of Deacon John and Susannah appear in the birth records of Bristol. Deacon John apparently was a slave owner; Bristol records disclose thedeaths of "Dea[con], his negro woman , Nov. 12, 1741; [and] his negroman, May ___, ."<ref>Ibid.m 1-166</ref> Susannah, wife of Deacon John, died 13 October 1768 at age 85 years. Deacon John died 25 January 1772 at the age of 96 years.<ref>Ibid.</ref> Their buriasl were apparently "non-cemetery burials"<ref>The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Volume 82, page 16 of 46.</ref> The will of John Throop of Bristol is dated 12 April 1762 and was proved 3 February 1772.<ref>Town of Bristol, Wills Inventories &c. no. 2 (1760–93) pages 123–4</ref> It names:
  • wife Susanna Throop
  • grandsons John Throope and Amos Throope
  • daughters Anne Waldron, Mary Marcy, and Rebecca Lyon
  • grandson Nathaniel Waldron
  • granddaughters Anstis Talby and Phebe Champlin
  • son John (named residual heir and executor)
