Peter was the oldest son of David and Isabel (Little) Knott, of Monmouth County, New Jersey.
In 1785, Peter was appointed as one of the Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church in Shrewsbury, Monmouth County.
In 1790, Peter married Lydia Hendrickson, daughter of Revolutionary War Loyalist Conradt Hendrickson and Mercy (Knott) Hendrickson, also from Monmouth County, New Jersey. Their children were David, Caroline, William Hendrickson, Samuel, Rachel, Mary Ann, and Peter.
