25. DEACON TIMOTHY5 (TIMOTHY,4 JOHN,3 STEPHEN,2 JOHN1), b. at Waterbury, Connecticut, 8 September 1723; m. 14 January 1741-42, Jemima Scovill, b. 24 February 1723 (?), daughter of Abraham Scovill of Simsbury, Connecticut. She d. 16 October 1771. (Records Congregational Church, Great Barrington.) He d. about 1774.
Deacon Hopkins removed from Waterbury, Connecticut, to Great Barrington, Massachusetts, prior to 1747, and became a substantial and influential citizen. He is described as a man "whose unswerving integrity and honesty of purpose commended him to the respect of the community." (Taylor's History of Great Barrington, p. 159.) He was chosen Deacon in 1753, and Selectman in 1756, from the North Parish of Sheffield. His name appears in a deed from the Indians 29 October 1756, for land in North Egremont and South Alford (Shawenon Purchase), and he was among the first settlers of Egremont in 1760. Mr. Hopkins was on the Committee to present a petition to the General Court to set off the North Parish of Sheffield as the town of Great Barrington, which was approved 30 June 1761. On 25 March 1769, he purchased an interest in the Susquehanna Company from Thomas Sherlock, one of its original proprietors, and in April he and his son Timothy6 joined the company of Major Durkee and removed to Wyoming, Pennsylvania. In October 1769, the executive committee of the settlers appointed him with four others "to view the ground for the five settling towns, or townships, and to assist the surveyor in laying out and pitching them." At a meeting of the company, held at Hartford, 6 June 1770, Mr. Hopkins was among the settlers appointed to assist Major Durkee in directing the affairs of the Wyoming settlement. He was among the first proprietors to make a home in Plymouth Township, now in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and was among those driven out of the valley by the "Pennymites" in June 1771, returning, however, in the following month to join Captain Butler and his men who were then besieging the "Pennymites."
The Probate Records of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, show that administration of the estate of Timothy Hopkins, of Great Barrington, was granted his sons Ichabod and Ehud 25 April 1774. No heirs were mentioned, and as was common in those times the estate was represented as insolvent.
