I was an orphan whose life was fraught with hardship. At 18, having no blood kin in Ohio, I asked a family to take me with them to Illinois. The father declined and said I needed someone who would look after me. I plead until he said, 'if I could make up my mind to become his companion he would take me with them.' I became a step-mother on 20 September 1826 to 8 children; two were older than I. I had 8 children of my own. I knew frontier life. When my husband died I lived with my son, near my stepson and his wife, who was my age and like a sister. I am buried in Utah.
