The will of Samuel Scudder, dated April 13, 1756; probated in the State of NY, March 28, 1785.
"I, SAMUEL SCUDDER, of New Town, Queens County, Nassau Island [Long Island], yeoman, being indisposed in Body. I bequeath to my dearly beloved wife Deborah ye use and income of ye one half of my Plantation during her widdowhood, in lieu of her dower after her decease to my son, Samuel Scudder, all ye plantation I now possess, he paying the following Legacys, that is to say: To his sister Sarah £100. To his sister Deborah £100.

Administration granted to DEBORAH DENMAN and Sarah Pettit, both of Newtown, spinsters, the FORMER a DAUGHTER and the latter granddaughter, residuary Legatees of Samuel Scudder, late of the same place, yeoman, deceased; the executors of the will being deceased before the Probate thereof, New York, March 28, 1785.
"[p.308, re: the will of Deborah Scudder Denman's brother, Samuel Scudder, "Jr."] Administration granted to DEBORAH DENMAN and Sarah Pettit, both of Newtown, Queens County, spinsters, SISTER and legatees OF SAMUEL SCUDDER [Jr., who died Aug. 31, 1771], late of the same place, yeoman, on the estate of the said Samuel Scudder ["Jr."]. Whereas Samuel Scudder made his will dated August 3, 1771, and appointed Richard Betts, J[r.], and Nathaniel Woodard, Executors, and soon after died, and whereas on the 11th day of November following at Queens County the will was proved, and administration granted to the said Executors, and whereas the Executors of the will of the said Richard Betts J[r.], the last surviving Executor of the said Samuel Scudder, did relinquish the Executorship of the said will, administration is granted to the above [Deborah Scudder Denman and Sarah Pettit]. New York, March 21, 1786."
By 1786, Deborah Scudder Denman's husband, Daniel Wright Denman, had long since somehow mysteriously dropped out of sight (probably died or missing in action), sometime during the Revolutionary War years.
