Joseph S. Hawks was born in Maine in 1822, the son of Moses Hawks. He was a millwright by trade and his father a farmer. In the spring of 1865 the family came to Winneshiek county, and located in Hesper township. They resided on two different farms until 1883, when they located on a farm in Section 22. He was married to Deborah W. Goodard, also of Maine. Two sons were born to them, S. G. and Alvin, both of whom have died. When they arrived in Decorah they hired a farmer to bring them to Burr Oak, the trip being made on a cold evening. They came to this part of the county in company with others, and of course at that time there were no railroads crossing the Mississippi, and the women of the party were taken across the ice in a sleigh, while the men and boys walked across. At the time of their marriage in Maine no clergyman officiated at their wedding. What was called the marriage license which is a prize possession of Loren and Carol Hawks is given as follows:

"Whereas, Joseph S. Hawks of St. Albans, son of Moses and Sarah Hawks, of St Albans, county of Somerset, and the state of Maine, and Deborah W. Goddard, daughter of Robert and Rusha Goddard, of Sidney, county of Kennebec and state aforesaid, having declared their intentions of taking each other in marriage to Sidney Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends held at Sidney, according to the good order used among them; and their proceedings, after due inquiry and deliberate consideration thereof, being allowed by the said meeting. They appearing clear of all others and having consent of parents. Now these are to certify to all whom it may concern that for the full accomplishment of their said intentions this 25th day of the 12th month in the year of our Lord One Thousand and Eight Hundred and Fifty One, they the said Joseph S. Hawks and Deborah W. Goodard appeared at a Religious Meeting of the aforesaid Society in Sidney and the said Joseph S. Hawks and
Deborah W. Goddard by the hand did openly declare as follows: IN PRESENCE OF THIS ASSEMBLY I TAKE DEBORAH W. GOODDARD TO BE MY WIFE, PROMISING THROUGH DIVINE ASSISTANCE TO BE UNTO HER A FAITHFUL, AND AFFECTIONATE HUSBAND, TILL DEATH SHALL SEPARATE US, and the said Deborah W. Goodard did then and there in like manner declare as follows: IN PRESENCE OF THIS ASSEMBLY I TAKE JOSEPH S. HAWKS TO BE MY HUSBAND, PROMISING THROUGH DIVINE ASSISTANCE TO BE UNTO HIM FAITHFUL AND AFFECTIONATE WIFE UNTIL DEATH SHALL SEPARATE US. And the said Joseph S. Hawks and Deborah W. Goddard as further confirmation thereof, having hereunto set their hands: She after the custom of marriage adopted the names of her husband.

JOSEPH S. HAWKS
DEBORAH W. HAWKS

And we whose names are hereunto subscribed, being present at the solemnization of their said marriage hereunto set our hands as witnesses thereunto, the day and year above written:

Gideon Wing, James Gifford, Daniel Gifford, Mary Gifford, Daniel Goddard, Judith S. Goddard, Arnold Gifford.

Her find-a-grave report indicates she was born at Sidney in Kennebec County, Maine.

This is the Quaker Meeting in which Deborah Goddard likely grew up.

"Sidney Preparative Meeting.— The Friends' meeting was begun
in Sidney in 1795, the preparative meeting being granted them in
1800; a monthly meeting was established in 1802, called Sidney
monthly meeting. This was for the accommodation of Friends in
Sidney and Fairfield, being held alternately at each place. Phineas,
Jeremiah and Obed Buttler, with their respective families, were the
earliest Friends in Sidney, they being Friends when they moved into
the town. Then a number of families came there from Sandwich,
Mass., among them Isaac Hoxie and family, Benjamin Wing, Adam
and Stephen Wing, also John Wing Kelley, and their families."

The 1850 census reveals Deborah, then 26, living in the home of the Pope family, Quakers we assume were related to her by friendship or family. tps://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M6JR-1QL

The census of 1850 lists her age as 26, which would make her likely born in 1824, as indicated in other records. However, her age may have been incorrectly guessed by the person who completed the survey.

Gideon Wing witnessed the marriage: When Gideon Wing was born on 6 February 1801, in Albion, Kennebec, Maine, United States, his father, Allen Wing, was 30 and his mother, Adra or Ardra Robinson, was 36. He married Elizabeth Savage on 18 August 1822, in Hallowell, Kennebec, Maine, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 1 daughter. He lived in Dexter, Penobscot, Maine, United States for about 10 years and Maine, United States in 1870. He died in May 1870, at the age of 69. https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/KC46-6MB/gideon-wing-1801-1870.

The Arnold Gifford who witnessed the wedding was likely this man: When Arnold Gifford was born on 18 February 1778, in Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts, United States, his father, Prince Gifford, was 31 and his mother, Elizebeth Gifford, was 33. He married Tamar Swift on 15 March 1823, in Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts, United States. He lived in Fairfield, Somerset, Maine, United States in 1850 and Sidney, Kennebec, Maine, United States in 1860. He died on 4 March 1861, in Maine, United States, at the age of 83, and was buried in Sidney, Kennebec, Maine, United States.

However:
The 1850 US census for Sidney, Maine lists residents Daniel Gifford (40), a farmer, Mary Gifford (39), Arnold Gifford (13), a student, Mary A Gifford (9), a student and Isaac Hoxie (83), a farmer. All except for Isaac were born in Maine; Isaac was born in Massachusetts in 1767 according to this record, in agreement with the birth record from Sandwich, Massachusetts.

It is possible that these were the Mary and Arnold Gifford who witnessed the wedding - they were all Quakers from Sidney, a small Quaker meeting. The elder Mary Gifford's mother's maiden name was Estes: Joseph Samson's great-grandmother was an Estes, and there is likely some relation.
