About Delia Miller
According to a delayed birth certificate, her full name is Lucretia Cordelia Hensley. She married James William Miller on July 24, 1904, at the First Methodist Church in Cannon, TX. Born to them were four children: Otto Frank, Thelma Irene, Hugh Lowell, and Elinor.
Delia's Granddaughter, Melba Hansard, has said that she was a kind and patient mother. She only punished two of her children once. The story goes that she asked her oldest children, Frank and Thelma-Irene (Melba's mother) to walk to the Cannon General Store and put a sack of sugar on the family tab. On the way home, Frank had a brilliant idea to climb on top of the chicken barn and feed the sugar to the animals. Melba said both children were punished, but at the same time, Delia was extremely disappointed in them. She supposedly wrote them a letter detailing her frustration. Melba believes she has the letter somewhere.
Unfortunately, a murder took place in the family, and from 1926-1931, she was called to testify as a character witness for her son, Otto Frank, who was killed by an irate police officer (Albert E. Lary). She never spoke of the trial, but she once yelled at Melba in the 1950s because she had bought her son, Doug Winham a toy gun.
She spent the last few years of her life living at the Calera, Oklahoma nursing home with her husband. She is buried at Cannon Cemetery next to her son (Frank), husband (James), and 2nd Great-Granddaughter (Katrina Dawn Miller).
