Delores Caldwell

Delores is a Menominee of the Bear clan.

Biography:

Per Joinson, Carla. Vanished in Hiawatha: The Story of the Canton Asylum for Insane Indians. University of Nebraska Press, 2016, pg. 318, the Father of Delores is an unknown, presumable he was a patient at the Canton Asylum. Dr. Hummer seems to have eliminated everyone, albeit with his typical biased excuses, other than Allen Owl, a Cherokee who was admitted on September 22, 1917, and discharged on October 26, 1920. Allen seems to have had roaming access of sorts and was allowed to work outside for a farmer....

According to the February 17, 1934 ltr. by Dr. L.L. Culp, Delores is buried in the Canton Hiawatha Cemetery, tier 6, plot 39

(Curator Note: FaG cannot be correct. Delores was born on May 26, 1921, she could not have died before she was born. Joinson provides a date of death as October 31 but that appears incorrect also, more likely a date of burial. Legacy government records from FamilySearch show a date of death as Oct. 28, 1921.)
