About Dennis Downing, Sr.

Dennis Downing, immigrant DOWNING ancestor, was born in England about 1615-20. He settled in Kittery, Maine, and was one of the signers of the submission to the jurisdiction of Massachusetts in 1652. He was a blacksmith by trade. He was living in 1690. Children: 1. Dennis Jr., killed by the Indians at Kittery, July 4, 1697, the same time as Major Charles Frost whose body was dug up by the Indians and suspended from a stake the night after his burial: he had a grant of land March 16, 1694, laid out December 21, 1709, to his brother, Joshua Downing, at Beaver Dam. 2. John, mentioned below. 3. Joshua, born 1644, married, 1675, Patience Hatch, daughter of Philip and Patience Hatch; second, Rebecca Trickey, widow of Joseph Trickey and daughter of William and Rebecca Rogers: children: i. Joshua, married Sarah Hall; ii. Elizabeth, married Jonathan Woodman; iii. Sarah, married Jonathan Mendum; iv. Alice, married Richard Downing, April 24, 1709.(4thson) Dennis,blacksmith (‘nailer’) of Spita fields, near Whitechapel, London, m. Nov. 1634, at Stepney, widow Anne Daines. His first app. here was on a Me. jury 25 No 1650, and a mo. later he bot the house which he was then liv. which became the homestead. App. he came without his family and in 1656, when his wife quarreled with Francis Trickey's wife, they liv. in Crooked lotLane, nearer his customers, on the 10 a. lot which his son 21 June 1679 sold to widow Joane Diamond. Jury 1656, const. 1656. Lists 282, 283, 285, 288, 298, 25. Jan. 16, 1676 he made over his est., with reserv. for life, to his son, lately m. to Patience Hatch, and confirmed it, with changed conditions, 20 Apr. 1690. W. Anne last ment. 1670. Ch: John, in court in 1653 for disobeying his father. He left home and had a family, but has not been ident. Presum. he was the cr. of Robert Weymouth's est. in 1663, List 28 and not unlik, was the J. D. of Canso. Do Hist. iv. 372. The father's deed of 1677 was on cond. that Joshua pay to John's dau. Joanna a cow and a calf on her wedding day which was not done, and the deed of confirm. in 1690 provided a payment of 12 pence each to his daus. Anne. Alice and Joanna if the demand it. Joshua, b. ab. 1644. Dennis, b. by ab. 1663, as his father signed ‘Senior’ ab. 1679. Lists 288, 94. Either this Dennis or [p.204] another, s. of bro. Joshua, was k. by Ind. 4 July 1697. List 96.
