Denzil (41), is believed to have been shot dead in the garden next to his home in Ormonde, Mondeor, around half past ten on Monday evening. He was known as a deeply religious person who, among other things, visited people in prisons and took them Bibles. According to Capt. Police spokesman Francois Grobbelaar said Davies apparently surprised burglars when they were trying to gain access to his home. He was overpowered and fatally wounded in the chest. "He died at the scene," Grobbelaar said. At this stage, the attackers seem to have chipped away without robbing anything. Davies' mobile phone and wallet lay untouched next to his body and his car was also still in the garage. Davies' housekeeper, Hermina Ramodibe (60), arrived at the house on Tuesday morning after being on holiday. She came across his body lying across the garden path. "I just saw blood and ran to Bennett's house." They immediately called the police. Davies, like the Bennetts, has lived in the townhouse complex for the past eleven years or so. "Ormonde Close has always been a safe haven for us to return to," Bennett said. They lived just a few houses away from each other. According to Bennett, the only shooting that the residents in this area hear is usually in the distance; Soweto's side. They have gotten used to that. "This may be the reason why my husband and I did not hear the shots that claimed Denzil's life," she said. The neighbors next to and opposite the murder scene, Ormonde Close no. 38, did hear a shot around half past ten on Monday evening. Police suspect the robbers quickly left after shooting Davies. There are footprints on the inside of the wall around his house, but not on the outside. According to Grobbelaar, they must have entered the premises at another place. There is still no conclusion as to whether the motive was indeed robbery.
Davies started working as a draftsman the previous year. He was a member of the Mathew 25 congregation that visited prisoners on weekends and distributed Bibles to them.
