Desmond Everitt Sterley (1955 – 2007)

Brief overview:

Desmond (54), was killed with a single shot in the head as he slept, a few months after he became manager at the Ambiance stud farm in the Brandwacht area.

Sterley used to be a big pig farmer near Bronkhorstspruit, but crime was one of the main reasons why he finally had to leave this farm.

The deceased's wallet with bank cards and firearm licenses, as well as his digital camera was recovered. Among other things, a cellphone is missing.
The suspects presumably struggled to get Sterley's old Toyota Land Cruiser to start and left it near the farm entrance. A Toyota pickup truck on the farm used a few miles further, with the keys still in it. The suspects left it there after apparently mistaking and connecting at a T-junction the other side of the road came to a stop.

The owner of Ambiance, Dr. Marianne Thomson, pleaded last night that the government is starting to do something about the crime situation. “I ask it with tears in my eyes: not as a white farm owner, but for all 20 families on my farm who are just as bad, or more, than me undergo crime. ”

  • Within two hours of a farm worker finding Sterley's body, Worcester police had arrested two suspects - a 20-year-old from Wellington and a 17-year-old without a fixed address from the Worcester area.
  • Both suspects have already served jail time for burglary in the Brandwacht Valley. It is uncertain whether they were out on bail when the murder was committed.
