About Diana Wyndham, Countess of Westmorland
Birth: May 7, 1893 Berkshire, England Death: Dec. 3, 1983 Badminton South Gloucestershire Unitary Authority Gloucestershire, England
Diana Lister was born at Ascot while her father was fulfilling his duties as Master of the Royal Buckhounds. She married Percy Wyndham in 1913 but he was killed the following year in WWI. She then trained as a nurse and went to France to tend the wounded. There she met "Boy" Capel who had been in the army and who then was transferred to the government commission working on coordinating the allies.
In 1918 she married Arthur Edward Capel but he was killed in an auto accident in 1919 in France. She then took some of the money she inherited and rented a London house and took out a tenacy at Lyegrove, Badminton, Glouchester.
In 1923 she married Vere Fane, the Earl of Westmorland. In the 1930's she discovered that her financial advisor and solictor had embezzled much of her money.
She had become a Catholic to marry Capel and her religion was a solace to her.
The servants left when WWII broke out in 1939 and she lived in reduced circumstances, Diana adjusted to it and lead a simple life until her death. She died in her sleep at Lyegrove and her funeral was held at the Catholic church at Chipping Sodbury. She was buried with her husband Vere Fane.
A description of her funeral service is in "Diaries 1971-1983 by James Lees-Milne.
