Diane Schiff

Diane was my mother's sister, the 2nd child, with Sol the youngest. She lived almost her entire life in New York, in a rent controlled co-op apartment. I remember her saying, through the years, multiple times, that on their 25th wedding anniversary, she and her husband would divorce. As a kid, I truly believed it! (At that age, I did not 'get' satire nor adult humor!) Upon husband Rudy Katz retiring, (though I never knew his occupation nor if she worked outside the home), they moved to Las Vegas, where he loved to play the casinos. When Diane would call my grandparents 'long distance' - there wasn't to be a sound in the house! Long distance to them was #1, expensive, & #2, often a bearer of sad news. But when Diane called, it was to stay in touch. I remember a visit to Akron with her 2 teen sons, Larry & Steve. I was in awe as they were slightly older! Diane developed breast cancer in both breasts followed by double mastectomies, which led to her death. (My mother had also experienced breast cancer, an eventual mastectomy, and a long life.) My mom & stepfather, Joe visited the Katz's first in Las Vegas, then in California, just prior to her death. Husband Rudy passed in Las Vegas a while later. Steve, Mom & I saw him while in Vegas on a vacation.
