  • Diederik Johannes van Romondt, born in Amsterdam, Holland, on February 16th 1781. He arrived in St. Maarten in the year 1801, and died there on April 19th 1849. In 1804, three years after his arrival, he married Ann Hassell (1784-1845) who was born in St. Maarten. She was the daughter of John Hassell and Susann Westerbrand.
  • Governor Diederik Johannes van Romondt and his wife, Ann Hassell, had the following children:
  1. 1. Johannes Will (1805-1849). He was married in 1826 to Judith Rink Tielenius Kruythoff (1808-1878) daughter of Adolph Tielenius Kruythoffand Sarah Gumbs. He was Governor of St. Maarten from 1840 until his death in 1849 and was known to one and alIas "Governor John."
  2. 2. Diederik Christian (1807-1865). He first married Susan Petersen in 1827, who was a daughter of Peter and Ann Maria Laporte. She was born in St. Barthelemy in 1810 and died in St. Maarten in 1848. His second marriage in 1853 was to Clemence Elisa Hedwige de Mary d'Arcy, daughter of Charles d'Arcy and Sophia Wilson of Guadeloupe. She was born in Guadeloupe in 1833 and died in North Brookfield, Massachusetts in 1925.
  3. 3. George Illidge (1809-1854). He was a medical doctor. In 1839 he married Angelina Peterson (1819-1889).
  4. 4. Lumina Maria (born 1810, died that same year).
  5. 5. Susan Elisabeth Illidge (1812-1844). She died in Niles, Michigan. Her second husband was Dr. P.P. Maillard. She left no children.
  6. 6. Willem Hendrick Rink (1829-1897). In 1852 he was married to Anne Walton Dalrymple (1825-1897) of Barbados.
  7. 7. Charles Roelof (1820-1889).
  8. 8. August Alexander(1823-1900). He was a plantation owner and local councilor. His first marriage was in 1844 to Charlotte Romney Barones von Britton (1826-1874) daughter of Dr. Baron Lucas and Ann Mardenborough. His second marriage was in 1875 to Robertine Maria Eliza Peterson, daughter of Robert and Adrianna Paulina Lenclaes du Cloux (1847-1925).
  • Diederik Johannes van Romondt served as Governor of St. Maarten from 1820 to 1840. He entertained Prince William Henry on his visit to St. Maarten in 1835. He was the first member of the House of Orange to pay a visit to the "Beach Island."
