Hy woon eers vier jaar in Kaapstad en daarna, tot 1729, op Stellenbosch waar hy in 1682 van Simon van der Stel die bekende plaas “Coetsenberg” in eiendom gekry het. Hy het ook grond in Jonkershoek gehad “Assagai Bosch” genoem. In 1687 is hy Heemraad en in 1706 kaptein van die Stellenbosche infanterie. x Sara van der Schulp, v. Amsterdam, d.v. Arrived in the Cape in 1679. He was the captain of the Stellenbosch Infantry. He founded the farm Coetzenberg in Stellenbosch.



Dirk Coetzee (Coetzier), born circa 1655, arrived in De Caap de Goede Hoop, from Holland, taking charge of the Military of the Caap and based in the Castle of Good Hope. As an expression of appreciation,Commander Dirk Coetzee,was presented with a farm in the Stellenbosch area, against the slopes of the mountain of Stellenbosch. Dirk Coetzee named his farm Coetzee-zijn-berg, later to become the famous Coetzenberg, where today, the Stellenbosch University and sport grounds are situated It is being argued that the full names of Dirk Coetzee was Hendrik Jacobus Coetzee The ceremonial sable (sabre) of Commander Dirk Coetzee, was handed down through generations of Coetzee (first born son, normally inherited, till last ownership landed with young Hendrik Jacobus Bekker, (his Mother Tienkie Coetzee). This ceremonial sabre, donated in the late fifties, to the Coetzee Museum in Zeerust, North West. (Old Dutch Reformed Church/Hervormde Kerk,) Zeerust original Coetzee farm, known as Coetzee'sRust. [1]

Dirk leaves Texel in Northern Holland on 19 December 1678 aboard the ship Asia[9] and arrive on 8 May 1679 in the Cape. He worked for his passage to the Cape, with the intention to settle in the Cape of Good Hope.

Slave Births Before 21 May 1709, Catie NN was born in bondage and was owned by Dirk Coetzee de Caep de Goede Hoop.21 Before 21 May 1709, Geertruijt NN was born in bondage and was owned by Dirk Coetzee de Caep de Goede Hoop.21 Slave Transactions In 1680 Anthony was sold, perhaps by Reijnier de Groot, to Dirk Coetzee.22 On 11 April 1686 Reijnier de Groot, demanded payment from Dirk Coetzee for Anthony, whom he had purchased in 1680, but had not paid for. Coetsé promised to pay within a year, however if he failed to do so, then Anthonij would become the property of Jeronimus Cruse.22 The Coetsee's are descendents from Dirk Coetsee (Dirk Couché) who’s well known Christian Huguenot family escaped from the religious prosecution of the John Calvin Huguenot Protestants in France. The family escaped via Kampen, Overijssel in the Dutch Republic in 1662 where they became members of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk

Dirk with some borrowed money, from his uncle, arrived in Cape Town on 8 May 1679 on the ship “De Asia”. On arrival he was appointed by the Cape Dutch East India Company as the captain of the Vrijburgers. Dirk almost immediately became a member of the newly formed Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk in Cape Town.

It was also here where Dirk Couché changed his surname by entering his name as Dirk Coetsee into the church register.

While in Cape Town Dirk quickly arranged for his wife-to-be Sara van der Schulp to travel to South Africa on the same ship “De Asia”. Sara joined Dirk in Cape Town where they got married a few months later.
