After his father's exile and his mother's departure to him, he was left in the care of his uncle, Ivan Alexandrovich Fonvizin. Student of St. Petersburg University. Already mortally ill with tuberculosis, in August 1849, on the advice of Pirogov, he went to the Caucasus for treatment. This saved him from arrest and interrogation in the Petrashevtsy case (the order to arrest Fonvizin was given by L.V. Dubelt on August 28). He died of consumption in Odessa in the family of P.N. Polivanov.
