Domenico Martinaglia

Nelson Martinaglia from the little village of Aglie, just west of Ivrea is the grandson of Domenico Martinaglia, brother of Guglielmo. Domenico arrived in South Africa in 1905, a few years after the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), and became a miner at Sheba Goldmine, Mpumalanga Province in the north-eastern part of South Africa. Soon after his arrival he died of malaria and is buried at the mine's cementry. In 1911 his son Giovanni Vittorio also went to South Africa and became a miner on the Main Reef, west of Johannesburg. In October 1913, only 2 years later, he had to return to italy, suffering from Miners Lung Disease. He died in Issiglio, in 1922.
