Donald was a jazz drummer, making the jazz circuit around the country while his children were young, eventually playing only local clubs as his family grew. He also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. His greatest joy was listening to jazz music, writing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.  At his death, he had 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
