Commercial Appeal articles from December, 1945 "Praised by Crump" In Memphis, E.H. Crump, Shelby County political leader, said Don McKellar was "regarded as one of the most efficient secretaries in Washington. He was courteous and energetic," said Mr. Crump. "He knew his way around and he knew the answers. He was highly regarded by everybody." A national magazine writer, in a story of Senator McKellar's political career, referred to Don McKellar as "one of the best secretaries on Capitol Hill." Don McKellar was born in Richmond, Ala., and came to Memphis as a small child. He was graduated from the old Memphis University School and as a young man was employed by the Southern Railway. He later became a real estate man before joining his brother in Washington as a senatorial secretary. He was a Presbyterian. In addition to Senator McKellar, Mr. McKellar leaves his wife, Mrs. Janice McKellar; four daughters, Mrs. Stuart McCloy of Memphis, Mrs. William Highberger of Alexandria, Va., Mrs. Irwin Dunn of Charlottesville, Va., and Donna McKellar, who lived with him in Washington; another brother, H. C. McKellar, Memphis postmaster.

"Don McKellar Dies; Brother and Secretary to Tennessee Senator" Memphis, Tenn., Dec. 21- Don McKellar, 64, brother and secretary to President pro tem of the Senate, Kenneth D. McKellar, died of pneumonia today at Baptist Hospital. He had been ill several weeks and his condition became critical yesterday. Mr. McKellar was a native of Alabama. For 16 years he was secretary to the Senator. His acquaintances among officials in Washington were numerous. Survivors include another brother, H. Clint McKellar, Memphis postmaster; his wife, Mrs. Janice Tuchfield McKellar, former of Jackson, Tenn., and four daughters, Donna, 6; Mrs. W. Stuart McCloy of Memphis, Mrs. C. I. Dunn of Charlottesville, VA., and Mrs. William Highberger of Alexandria, Va. Senator McKellar left Washington for Memphis yesterday when he learned of his brother's critical condition. Mr. McKellar grew up in Memphis and was in the employ of the Southern Railway and other railroads and later was with a shipping company in New York. From New York he came to Washington to be his brother's secretary. The Don McKellar home here is at 120 C street N.E. Mr. Dunn, his son-in-law, was formerly with the Washington area Milk Marketing Administration, leaving to enter the military government branch of the Army, in which he held the rank of major. He recently returned from duty in Italy.
