DONALD SIKKEMA: An official two - hour period of mourning has been proclaimed here Wednesday for Donald J. Sikkema, community leader who died Sunday in Mercy Hospital after suffering what is believed to have been a stroke.
Funeral services for Mr. Sikkema, who was 50, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Second Reformed Church. The Rev. Jack Van Heest will officiate. A family prayer service will be conducted at 1:45 p.m. in the church parlors.
Mayor Warren Wiersema today proclaimed the hours of 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday for "all citizens of this community to pay their last respects" to Mr. Sikkema. The proclamation requests business places to close and flags to be flown at half-mast. It says, "all of the people of this community owe a deep debt of gratitude to this outstanding community leader."
Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the Sikkema funeral home, which Mr. Sikkema had operated since 1937. Burial will be in Fulton cemetery, Fulton Whiteside Co. Illinois.
Mr. Sikkema was president of the Fulton Community High School board of education; a director of the Fulton cemetery, Fulton Whiteside Co. Illinois board; president of the Fulton Business Men's Association; a member of the Illinois Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association; and past president of the Fulton Kiwanis Club. He had served as an elder and deacon in the Second Reformed Church. He had been chairman of an industrial development drive in Fulton.
Donald J. Sikkema was born June 15, 1912 in Fulton, a son of Joseph D. and Cornelia Buikema (sic*) Sikkema. He was a graduate of Fulton High School and Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago. On June 3, 1939, he married Helen Kamphuis in Fulton.
Surviving are his widow; one daughter, Carol of New Brunswick, N.J.; his mother, Mrs. John H. Dykema of Fulton; one brother, Joel of Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Marjorie Kisthard of Fulton; and two nephews.
