    Duncan, 1st Earl of Carrick was the son of Gilbert of Galloway.1 He died on 13 June 1250.1

Duncan, 1st Earl of Carrick was created 1st Earl of Carrick [Scotland] circa 1186.1 He fought in the Irish Wars, with King John of England.1

He may have been Donnchadh's son, or else as suggested by one recent genealogical theory, his grandson. It has been argued that Niall's father was Nichol (Cailean or Colin), son of mormaer Donnchadh by the daughter of Niall Ruadh, briefly king of Tír Eóghain.

Duncan, then probably a minor. He is afterwards mentioned as Sir Duncan de Carrick. The death of Gilbert was the signal for general turmoil among the Glaswegians. Roland, the son of the murdered Uchtred, defeated the supporters of the late Gilbert in a furious fight, 5 July 1185, and slew Henry Kennedy and others who are described as leaders and instigators of rebellion. In 1186 Duncan compromised with Roland, in consequence of which King William the Lion confirmed to him the territory of Carrick on condition he renounced all claims to the southern portion of ancient Galloway. He had considerable estates, at the same time, in the north of Ireland. In 1193, or before 1197, he granted the lands of Maybothelbeg or Little Maybole to the monks of Melrose, and he also founded and richly endowed the Abbey of Crossraguel, and there are many other instances of his munificence ot the Church. He took part with King John of England, who calls him his cousin or kinsman, in his wars in Ireland. He also captured Matillidis de Haya, wife of William de Braosa, her son and doughtier, who had fled from Ireland to Scotland, and handed them over to the English King. He was present when Alexander II. took his oath to marry Joanna, eldest sister of Henry III. Duncan is said to have been created EARL OF CARRICK by King Alexander II. between 1225 and 1230, on condition that he resigned all claim to the lordship of Galloway. The descendants of Duncan and his son Neil appear to have taken the name of de Carrick. Earl Duncan died 13 June 1250. He carried off in 1200, and probably married, Avelina, daughter of Alan Fitz-Walter, then High Steward of Scotland. His seal, as attached to various original charters, bears the device of a griffin or dragon, not on a shield. He had issue:

Duncan is reported as being created Earl of Carrick by Alexander II between 1225 and 1230 following further confirmation of his resignation of all claim to the Lordship of Galloway.
