Pronounced DeBORah (or sometimes DeVERah)
When she got married, they took her name instead of his. We don't know why, Perhaps the marriage had something to do with immigration rules? (Though both are listed as aliens on various census docs.) Or prhaps David was trying to hide something.
In 1900, David's occupation is "rags picker." The 1910 census lists no occupation for David, but Benjamin (age 16) works in an office. I thought that perhaps David wasn't living there, and that's why they took in a boarder with a job (see 1900 census) til someone in the family was old enough to support them. But the fact that Dora had a number of kids in the decade following their arrival into this country essentially eliminates that as a possibility.
(Aside: how did we determine that his last name was Beck? Could we be wrong about this?)
