Dora Etta Pugh

Dora Etta Pugh, who credited her longevity to "clean living" died Monday night at Baptist Hospital at age 106.

When Mrs. Pugh Married and moved to Memphis, Mud Island had not yet formed in the Mississippi River and the city was not officially a city, having surrendered its charter from 1879 until 1893 because of the yellow fever epidemic.

As she neared the century mark, she told The Commercial Appeal she had always been in "good health - the only thing that ever hurts me is my conscience a bit now and then.

"I really don't know how I've lived so long, except that I believe in clean living." Mrs. Pugh said, "I never smoked cigarettes, drank whisky or did anything bad for my health."

Mrs. Pugh operated a boarding house at Vance and Eat for a number of years and worked for a local furrier and at the old Gerber's Department Store. Her husband, Ellis Pugh was a silk spotter. He died almost 30 years ago.

She was a member of Buntyn Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Lyonel Pugh, with whom she lived at 6680 Corsica; 10 grandchildren; 10 grea-grandchildren;11 great-great grandchildren and 2 great-great-great . grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Memorial Park. Memorial Park Funeral home has charge.
