The Drakes listed in Adrain Channing's post, basically confirms the data as
> printed in the genealogy, The Drake Family of England and America, L. S.
> Drake, Boston, 1896. The publication, The Worthies of Devon by Prince also
> lists Sir Bernard Drake's heir, John who m. Dorothy Button, dau of William
> Button of Alton in Wilts. This is also listed on p xiii of the Drake
> genealogy. We now have 2 publications that compliment and confirm the
> ancestors of John Drake and his wife Dorothy Button of Ashe and Mount Drake.
> John Drake and Dorothy had 3 children, of which William of Yardbury, parish
> of Colyton, the 2nd son, m. Margaret, dau and heiress of William Westofer
> (Westover) of Colyton, p xiii and
> p xv of the Drake genealogy.
>
> William and Margaret(Westofer) Drake had 8 children (Drake genealogy, pp xv,
> xvi)
> of which is stated that: Joan, child 4; Elizabeth, child 6 and Thomas, child
> 8 all emigrated to America. I have read of the volumeous arrival of
> immigrants and ships to the colonies during this and earlier time periods. I
> highly suspect the computers of the "dock watchers" developed a "glitch" and
> were cut off line when the ships docked and passengers came thundering down
> the gang planks to kiss mother earth, trampling everthing and everyone in
> their path. Because of this, I seriously doubt we will ever see a ships name
> or passenger list showing the 3 Drake names. But then again, pleasent
> surprises happen.
>
> The Drake genealogy (1896) states that the will of William Drake is still in
> existence. Although it lists it as being: P.C.C. Coventry 25, it was not
> printed in the genealogy. If the children were listed in the will, this would
> confirm another
> generation from William and Margaret and might cease the controversy as to
> whether Thomas and his sisters were the children of William Drake and his
> wife
> Margaret Westofer/Westover.
>
> Your input was very much appreciated, Adrian, a great many thanks. Now could
> we see the will P.C.C. Coventry 25 you are holding for the next post? Just
> joking here, but I hope it surfaces. Thanks also to everyone who is trying to
> put together another piece of their family puzzle. Earl. e1091@aol.com
First, Burke in whatever form is highly suspect. Occasionally they got
something right. The microfilmed Perogative Court of Canterbury wills
are available through your friendly Family History Center.
David Greene may have something on John Drake later on.
