18) John18 Wentworth, Esq., born in 1540, was of Little Horksley and Gosfield, co. Essex, having inherited the latter estate on the death of his uncle Sir John17. His Will, dated 27 January 1587—8, was proved 29 January 1588-9.
He married, first, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Christopher Heydon, Kt., of Baconsthorp, co. Norfolk, who died in 1573 ; and secondly,
Dorothy, daughter of Sir Richard Southwell, Kt., of Woodrising, co. Norfolk, and widow of Thomas Huggins, Esq. By the latter (who survived him, and remarried Sir Edward Moore, Kt., of Mellefont, in Ireland, ancestor of the Marquess of Drogheda), he had issue,

  • (1) Richard19;
  • (2) Elizabeth19, who married, first, Christopher St. Lawrence, twenty-second Baron of Howth, in Ireland, and secondly, Sir Robert Newcomen, Kt. and first Bart., of Ireland; and
  • (3) Mary19, who married, first, Edward Warner, Esq., of Mildenhall, co. Suffolk, who died 14 May 1618, and secondly, Sir Thomas Gee, Kt., of Mildenhall, whom she survived, dying in 1661
