  • Sir Roger Wentworth, of Codham Hall, by his wife Anne Tyrrell (see back to number 2 of XIV. of this note) had a second son, Henry Wentworth, Esq., Mountnessing, Co. Essex, and died in his father's lifetime, leaving by his wife Anne, daughter of Reginald Hammond, Esq. (with other issue), a son, John Wentworth, Esq., born 1540, buried at Gosfield, 3 April, 1588. He inherited Gosfield Hall from his uncle Sir John Wentworth, Kt. (see back to number 2 of XIV. of this note), and by his first wife Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Christopher Heydon, Kt., had with other issue a son, John Wentworth, Esq., born 1564, buried in Gosfield church, 11 February, 1613-4, who married Cecelia, daughter of Sir Edward Unton, by Anne, Countess of Warwick, and had with other issue Sir John Wentworth, Kt., of Gosfield, created a Baronet, 29 June, 1611, and died in October 1631, when, having no surviving male issue, the Baronetcy expired. _____________________________

He married in 1528 (the marriage license dated 25 September) Agnes, daughter and heir of Sir Reginald Hammond, Kt., of co. Kent, who survived him and remarried, at Gosfield, 18 January 1545-6, William Wilford, Esq., of London. By her, Henry had issue as follows: --

    • 5. Peter Wentworth (Rev.), rector of Great Bromley, co. Essex, and chaplain to Lord Darcy. His Will, dated 1 September 1592, was proved 14 September 1599. By is wife Elizabeth Moone, who survived him, he had issue, (1) Elizabeth; (2) William; (3) Anne; (4) Sothell (or Southwell), a son; (5) Mary, -- all living in 1592.
    • 6. Anne, who married, at Gosfield, 26 October 1551, Thomas Silesden, Esq., of Finchingfield, co. Essex, who died in 1562.
    • 7. Mary, who married, at Gosfield, 16 September 1562, William Gardinall, Jr., Esq., of Great Bromley, co. Essex, who survived her.

  • (18) John18 Wentworth, Esq., born in 1540, was of Little Horksley and Gosfield, co. Essex, having inherited the latter estate on the death of his uncle Sir John17. His Will, dated 27 January 1587-8, was proved 29 January 1588-9. He married, first, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Christopher Heydon, Kt., of Baconsthorp, co. Norfolk, who died in 1573 ; and secondly, Dorothy, daughter of Sir Richard Southwell, Kt., of Woodrising, co. Norfolk, and widow of Thomas Huggins, Esq. By the latter (who survived him, and remarried Sir Edward Moore, Kt., of Mellefont, in Ireland, ancestor of the Marquess of Drogheda), he had issue, (1) Richard19; (2) Elizabeth19, who married, first, Christopher St. Lawrence, twenty-second Baron of Howth, in Ireland, and secondly, Sir Robert Newcomen, Kt. and first Bart., of Ireland; and (3) Mary19, who married, first, Edward Warner, Esq., of Mildenhall, co. Suffolk, who died 14 May 1618, and secondly, Sir Thomas Gee, Kt., of Mildenhall, whom she survived, dying in 1661. John18 Wentworth had issue by his first wife, Elizabeth (Heydon)

    • 2. William19, who died unmarried, and was buried at Gosfield 28 November 1588.
    • 3. Henry19, who, by his wife Margaret (buried at Gosfield 13 March 1591-2), had an only daughter Cecilia20, who was baptized at Gosfield 30 March 1592.

  • (19) John19 Wentworth, Esq. was Sheriff of Essex in 1593, and was buried at Grosfield 11 February 1613-14. He married Cecilia, daughter and coheir of Sir Edward Unton, Knight of the Bath, by his wife Lady Anne Seymour, daughter of Edward, Duke of Somerset. She survived him, and remarried Sir Edward Hoby, Kt., of Bisham, co. Berks, who died in 1617. She died at Bisham, 16 June 1618, aged 57, and was buried at Aston Rowant, co. Oxford. By her, John19 Wentworth had issue as follows : — .... ____________________________
