About Dorothy Mae Smith

HAMLIN-Dorothy Mae (Sorrell) Smith, 91, passed away Monday, October 31, 2011, at Home Place Manor. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011, at the Hamlin United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, directed by Adams-Foster-Ray Funeral Home in Hamlin. Visitation will be 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, November 4, 2011, at the funeral home. Born July 13, 1920, in McKinney, Dorothy attended a one-room, one teacher school house before graduating from McKinney High School and attending North Texas University. While working in Dallas, she met Marshall Leroy Smith, a medical student at Baylor Medical. They married June 6, 1943, and moved to Houston, Springfield, Ohio, Amarillo and Dimmitt before settling in Hamlin where they raised their three sons and became a part of the community. An avid golfer, champion bridge player, and devoted member of the Hamlin United Methodist Church, Dorothy's real passion lay in her family. She was a Cub Scout Mother, PTA President, and Senior Class Parent for all of her children, an honor she particularly relished. She played in the Women's West Texas Golf Tournament for many years with a devoted group of friends. A long time member of the Taylor-Jones Medical Auxiliary, Dorothy founded the Pink Ladies volunteer organization for the Hamlin Memorial Hospital. After Leroy's retirement, they spent much of the year at their beloved house in Ruidoso, playing golf, attending the horse races, and making many new friends. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband and best friend of 60 years, Dr. M.L. Smith in 2002, her parents, and one sister, Mildred Stailey. Survivors include her son, Gary Smith and wife, Sue of Abilene, grandson, Cameron of San Antonio; her son, Mike Smith and wife, Lynne of Corvallis, Montana, granddaughter, Hanna of Corvallis, Montana and grandson, Isaac of Bozeman, Montana; and her son Mark Smith and Fiancé, Gerri of Phoenix, grandson, Lee and wife, Liz of San Francisco, and granddaughter, Carly Caniglia and husband, Steve, and her one and only great grandchild, Leo of Phoenix (Dorothy was able to meet Leo two weeks before her death); one brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Marion Sorrell; and two sisters, Eva Ellis and Joy Wood. In lieu of flowers memorials maybe made to one's favorite charity.
