Douw van Tonder (1978 - 2002)

Brief overview:

Douw (24), was overpowered, by an unknown number of perpetrators, when he entered his house, on 12th October 2002. The attackers stabbed him with a hunting knife and assaulted him with a rifle. Before he died, Douw managed to shoot at the attackers with his 9mm pistol and one was wounded in the leg. His wife Alitia was injured during the attack but managed to escape.

Police arrested worker, Hendrik Moshima (41), also known as Madasko, near Villa Nora. Police, members of the local commando and farmers had been searching for him since early on Sunday morning. Abel Makgai (29), who appeared with Moshima on Wednesday, was found in the veld near Van Tonder's home with a serious leg wound on Sunday morning. Makgai has been transferred from Marapong private clinic to Polokwane (Pietersburg) provincial hospital, where he is under police guard.

Superintendent Wessel Geldenhuys, commissioner of the Lephalale police station, said Moshima appeared in court on Wednesday on charges of murder and armed robbery. More charges might be added.

Douw van Tonder was the son of a well-known farmer of the Marken area, Roland van Tonder, and his wife, Rita.
