About Dr. Alan Erwin Stewart, DDS

Dr. Alan Erwin Stewart died peacefully at home with his family by his side August 3, 2010. Born on January 24, 1921 in Peoria, IL, Alan was the only child of Sanford E. and Rose (Rosenfeld) Stewart. He attended local schools in Peoria before graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois, Cham-paign-Urbana, where he was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity. Alan continued his education at the University of Illinois, Chicago, School of Dentistry, receiving his D.D.S. degree in 1944 and opening his dental practice in Pekin, IL that same year.

On July 3, 1946, Alan married Nancy Patricia Frankel in Peoria, IL. Alan and Nancy met when he accompanied a friend to the University of Illinois who was visiting his sister at the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. Someone called out "fourth for bridge?" and Alan joined the group. Nancy was his partner that day and has been his loving partner for 64 wonderful years.

In 1952 Alan served in Korea as a captain in the 8th Army 159th Artillery Division Dental Corps. As he later recounted, he did "one day of dentistry," and spent the rest of his time there helping the physicians in a MASH unit. When he was not helping with casualties, he volunteered to provide medical and dental care for Korean War orphans. With the assistance of his wife, Nancy, and her Women's Club in Pekin, a clothing drive was organized and donated goods were sent overseas. Decades later, Alan, along with many other American servicemen, were treated to a visit to Korea by the South Korean government and awarded a medal in recognition for his service. In 1954, following his tour of duty in Korea, Alan relocated his dental practice and moved with his family to Millbrae, CA eventually settling in Hills-borough, CA. In 2008 Alan and Nancy moved to Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, CA.

He was a member of the Chicago and Peoria Dental Societies, the San Mateo Dental Society, and was a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry. Alan was inducted into the Peoria Masonic Lodge #129 and served as a Master Mason and Shriner for over 70 years. Alan lived life to the fullest, enjoying theater, art, music and a good bottle of wine. A devoted golfer, Alan was a member of Green Hills Golf and Country Club, Millbrae, CA, for 36 years. Both Alan and Nancy were avid travelers visiting numerous countries on six continents.

Alan is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; three children Stephen E. (Joanne) Stewart of Camarillo, CA; Martha Jo (Terry) Huff of Kenosha, WI; and Marcia Lynn (Mark) Tuttle of Orinda, CA. He is further survived by six grandchildren, Amy Huff Martin, Lindsay Huff (Matt) Jenks, Daniel and David Stewart, Sam and Rose Tuttle and four great-grandchildren, Aidan Patrick and Alannah Rose Martin, Avery Arthur Barnes, and Quincy Rose Jenks.

A private service and interment was held at the Hills of Eternity, Colma, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to: The Rossmoor Fund//FORF/ Parkinson's, c/o Masha Henzel, Rossmoor Fitness Center, 1751 Tice Creek Dr., Walnut Creek, CA 94595.
