About Dr Alfred William Hatfield, Sr
Dr. Hatfield, Pioneer Wichita Dentist, Dies
One of Wichita's first six dentist died Friday after 75 years of practice in this city.
Dr. Alfred Hatfield, 98, of 1701 S. West, came to Wichita in a covered wagon with his family in 1878. He remembered when there were plenty of buffalo in Kingman County and Wichita was a bustling trading center for cattle drivers and sod busters and "it was a tough county."
Bat Masterson and his brother George lived just down the road from the Hatfield farm. "I used to be over there quite a lot and quite often I'd stay for dinner." Dr. Hatfield said in a 1930 interview. He also remembered seeing Wyatt Earp.
Born in Lincoln, Ill., Dr. Hatfield began work in dentistry at the age of 16 by apprenticing himself to a series of dentist for five years, working in the laboratory first and then moving into chair work. He then attended what is now Kansas City Western Dental Collage.
After practicing in Wichita seven years, Dr. Hatfield went to Houston, Tex., but after a year he came back and opened an office in the first block on North Main. He spent four years in the old Schweiter Building and then moved back to 137½ N. Main, where he stayed nearly half a century.
Dr. Hatfield still had a practice in his home on South West until last February when he and his third wife, Anna fell in an accident at their home. Mrs. Hatfield died a week later and Hatfield was hospitalized unit his death.
Hatfield outlived all of this eight brothers and two sisters and all but one of his five children.
A son, Dr. Reed Hatfield, 14 Drury, Eastborough, also a dentist, is the only immediate survivor.
Gill Mortuary has charge.
