About Dr. Artur Rosenberg

Author and journalist Artur Rosenberg was born on July 6, 1887 in Maribor, which at that time belonged to the Grazer Kultusgemeinde, the son of leather merchant Alexander Rosenberg from Kutjevo, Croatia, and his wife Hermine née Neumann. Hermine née Neumann and her family came from Güssing and settled in Graz and both of her parents are buried in the Jewish cemetery in Graz.

Later, Artur Rosenberg moved with his parents in Graz, where he first attended high school, then enrolled at the University of Graz, studying history with Karl Uhlriz and earning his doctorate there in 1914. His dissertation „Beiträge zur Geschichte der Juden in Steiermark“ (Contributions to the History of the Jews in Styria) was published in the same year by Braumüller Verlag. At a very young age he researched and wrote articles on local history.

In 1915, Artur Rosenberg married doctor's daughter Anna Leopoldine Gutmann, born in Graz, whose parents are buried in the Graz Jewish cemetery.

From 1926 Rosenberg was a freelance journalist in Paris where he was on the foreign policy staff of major German newspapers, and served as Paris correspondent of the Neue Freie Presse and the Pester Lloyd. After the Anschluss in 1938, he was involved in the efforts for an Austrian exile government. As an exile, he was interned in 1939 in the camp Audierne in Brittany. After the German invasion of France, he was able to hide in a mountain village in Savoy.

From 1945 he was in Innsbruck as a correspondent of the French Le Monde and worked for the magazine Österreichsiche Monatshefte. From 1951 to 1953 he was again in Paris, serving as a correspondent for the newspaper Die Zeit. From 1958-1962 Rosenberg acted as an intermediary between the representatives of the Government de Gaulle and the Algerian Front de libération nationale (FLN). For this he was appointed a member of the Legion of Honor.

Artur Rosenberg died in 1969 in Switzerland.
