The objective of this project is to build family trees for all Jewish families with members who resided in, were born, married or died in Graz, Austria, or other portions of Austria recorded in the vital records of the Graz Jewish community and Graz population register. These include Jews living in other parts of Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola (Krain). Subprojects of this project will include the families and Holocaust victims from areas with more than 100 Jewish births.
- Styria
- Bruck-Mürzzuschlag (BM), Liezen (LI), and Murtal (MU) with approximately 170 births
- Graz (G) with approximately 2,250 births and Graz-Umgebung (GU) with 37 births on the main project page
- Leoben (LN) (191 births)
- Murtal (MT) (formerly Judenburg and Knittelfeld districts) (201 births)
- Southeast portion of Styria, excluding Graz and Graz Umgebung. Deutschlandsberg (DL), Hartberg-Fürstenfeld (HF), Leibnitz (LB), Südoststeiermark (SO), Voitsberg (VO), and Weiz (WZ) (about 100 births)
- Carinthia (in Austria and modern Slovenia) (190 Jews in 1890)
- Lower Styria, Krain and Carniola (areas in modern Slovenia) (approximately 150 births)
After a reliable Jewish presence from at least the end of the 13th century, Jews were expelled from Styria and the rest of Austria in 1496/97. Some individual families obtained special permits to live in Graz after 1848, but other Jews only obtained the right to stay overnight from 1861. In 1867, a city law granted personal freedom to the Jews.
The following sources discuss the history of the Jewish Community of Graz:
- The Beit Hatfutsot, The Museum of the Jewish People.
- Jüdische Gemeinde Graz
- Binder, Dieter A., et al. Judentum in Einer Antisemischen Umwelt, Am Beispiel der Stadt Graz 1918-1938, Graz 1988.
According to Beit Hatfutsot, the "number of members of the Jewish community in Graz rose from 250 in 1869 to 1,200 in 1880. In 1932 there were about 2,450 Jews living in Styria." After the annexation of Austria in March 1938, 1,600 Jews remained in Graz on Kristallnacht, 417 emigrated. November 9-10, 1938, over 300 Jewish men were deported to Dachau concentration camp. Only 300 remained in the city in June 1939 and most of them perished in death camps after forced relocation to Vienna. In the spring of 1940, Graz declared itself Judenrein.
In the beginning of 1946, about 30 Jews reestablished a Jewish community in Graz, first covering only Styria and then extending to South Burgenland, Carinthia and Eastern Tyrol in 1955. The Jewish Community of Graz now has about 70 members, according to Beit Hatfutsot.

My Wurmfeld family lived in Graz from about 1875 until 1932, beginning with my third great grandfather, József Wurmfeld (1819 Répceszemere-1898 Graz) and his sons David who moved to Szombathely and Ignaz, my second great grandfather (1844-1923 Graz), who ran a kosher restaurant in Graz. Alexander (1879 Graz-1927 Graz), son of Ignaz, ran the fish market "Wurmfeld Alexander." After he died, my grandmother, Elsie Schoenbrun (Lefkovits) inherited and ran the fish market and it remained in the family until it was Aryanized in 1938. This is the entry for it in "Handelsgerichtlich engetragene (protokollierte) Firmen in Graz" in 1937.
My great-grandmother, Johanna Lefkovits (Wurmfeld) was born in Graz in 1881, lived in Szombathely after marriage, and died in Auschwitz in 1944. She received income from Wurmfeld Alexander until it was Aryanized.

It will document, to the degree practical, the family trees of all of the Jewish Holocaust victims and known survivors. This list also includes Stolpersteine that memorialize Jewish Holocaust victims and those who fled due to Nazi persecution.
Except if noted, places are locations associated with the person, not necessarily birth locations.
