Cecilia (58), a former lecturer in mathematics at RAU, was shot in the head outside her house in Ferndale, Randburg on 17th December 2002.
Cecilia was with her friend, Dr Clive Chappell, when two males attacked them. They were carrying garden refuse to her car. The gunmen demanded jewellery, and Clive replied that they didn't have any. He was then hit across the head with a pistol.
When Cecilia started screaming, the one gunman put the pistol against her head and pulled the trigger. "Through the blood in my eyes I saw him pulling the rings from her fingers and, the next thing, he and his accomplice fled through the security gate. They had no sympathy," said Clive.
Cecilia's son, Eugene said that his mother was the first woman in South Africa to obtain a doctor's degree in mathematics. She had worked in the information technology section of Absa's head office in Johannesburg for the past few years.
