In a document from Vin Gillman-Bate on the descendants of William Wright (1933) there is a description of C.H. Caldecott's later life : "lived at the farm Scaarpkraal owned by his father-in-law William Wright until the eruption of the kaffirs in 1846, when he and his wife were driven to seek refuge in Cradock; there he opened business and lived until 1857 when he moved to Grahamstown. Was twice returned to Parliament as Member of House of Assembly for Cradock in 1857-59. In 1868 he was returned Member of Legislative Council and was also Mayor of Grahamstown in 1860. He died at his daughter Mrs. Selby Coryndon's house July 1879."
