About Dr. Christopher Bennett Fleet
Born at "Rural Felicity" his father's home in King and Queen County, VA. The eldest son. A graduate of the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania. Given "Fleetwood" by his father. He and Mary Ann McKim were married by Rev. Robert Baylor Semple. Semple became his father-in-law when Mary Ann died and he married Lucy Semple.
After Lucy's father, Rev. Robert Baylor Semple, died, they went to live in his house, "Mordington" some time between 1832 and 1837. "Fleetwood" was then rented to Oliver White, a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, who opened Fleetwood Academy there.
Henley's Index (LVA website) shows that on Aug 21, 1839, Edward Garlick died at Fleetwood , King and Queen County, leaving children.
1815: Listed as a subscriber to the First American Edition of "Nicholson's Encyclopedia." It appears almost all the prominent in King and Queen County are on the list. (VA Gen. Soc. Quartlery, Vol XX11, No. 2, 1 May 1984).
Buried in "Goshen" cemetery. His inscription reads - "Sacred to the memory of Christopher B. Fleet. Born Dec 1st 1796. Died Oct. 27, 1845. Early in life he connected himself with the Baptist Church of Bruington. He lived a devoted and pious Christian and died triumphantly. "For him to live was Christ to die was gain."(p.455)
The 1830 King & Queen Co., Virginia census lists him with no females and one son under 5 and two sons between five and ten. He has 20 slaves.
The 1840 King and Queen Co., VA census lists him with two females under 5 and one woman between 20 and 30. Males: one (under 5); one (5-10); one (10-15); one (15-20) and one (40-50). He has 28 slaves with four working in agriculture and one man in the learned profession. He is listed next to Oliver White who has an academy with 20 students.
