Known children: Mary "Polly" Sherwood (married Silas Fellows, July 21,1795); Harriet (married Asa M. Moss); Sarah "Sally" (married Edward Moss; Asa M. Moss); Thomas; Charlotte; and Adiel. From "The Memoirs of Adiel Sherwood", by daughter Julia.

!"Adiel Sherwood, son of Seth, and grandson of the fourth Thomas Sherwood was the father of Dr. Sherwood". (This conflicts with notes, RIN on Thomas Sherwood that said he was a carpenter). "He was a gentleman of commanding presence --- a splendid specimen of manhood. Proud and high spirited, he was born to rule. In manners, he was stately and dignified, and in his personal appearances he was extremely neat, taking special pride in his dress and clinging to the old customs; even until his death he wore his hair arranged in the old-fashioned queue*. His hands were small and finely-shaped. He was fond of politics and, as an old-line democrat, represented his district in the state legislature for several sessions.

  • (A queue referred to on the previous paragraph is a braid usually down the back. - George Washington style.

"An amusing anecdote, relating to Revolutionary times, is told of him. It seems that two of the soldiers attached to his regiment had a personal difficulty, which resulted in a challenge to a fight, a duel being made and accepted; and one of the men requested Colonel Shrewood to act as his second.

"I'll act as second for both parties,' was his reply.

"Accordingly, when the duelists appeared on the ground, Colonel Sherwood, with his military cloak thrown over his uniform, advanced, stepped off the distance between the combatants, presented them with their weapons and, then, drawing from beneath his cloak a bottle of brandy, he placed it midway between the two and exclaimed:

"Now, my comrades, this affair has gone far enough. I admire your bravery, which has been fairly tested, but I haven't a man in my command whom I can spare, to be killed in a duel. Come! Let us drink and be friends, and save our bullets for our enemies."

"This broke up the duel and ended the quarrel, and the two would-be duelists made peace over a bottle of brandy."

"Colonel Sherwood was born December 25, 1749, and died December 14, 1824. He was Master of Washington Masonic Lodge No. 11 of Fort Edward, NY. He entered the Continental Army as Lieutenant and was later promoted to Colonel. He commanded at various times Fort Ticonderoga (1776), and Fort Ann (1777); fought under Arnold to repel the British from New York and under Washington at Monmouth and wintered with Washington at Valley Forge; was captured and held in prison until 1782 when he returned to America and settled at Fort Edward, NY."

"In 1783 he was elected to NY Assembly (This date obtained from "Memoirs of Adiel Sherwood" published by Grant & Farres, Philadelphia (1884) and from Family Bible of Rev. Wm. A Florence. Dr. Adiel Sherwood of Mercer University, located then at Penfield, Georgia, now at Macon, Georgia, is a son of this Revolutionary soldier."

"This Rev. Soldier's grave is in Sandy Hill, NY, and the inscription on the headstone is as follows:

"In memory of Col. Adiel and Sarah Sherwood, Born December 25, 1749, in Washington, Connecticut, A Captain in the Revolutionary Army. Taken prisoner at Fort Ann October 10, 1780. Died December 1821. Sarah Sherwood was born June 1755. Died March 1827."

Commissioned as Lieutenant in 1776. Promoted to Captain and stationed at Fort Ticonderoga. Fought under Arnold to repel British from New York. Fought under George Washington at Moremoth and wintered with Washington at Valley Forge. Prisoner of War at Montreal until 1782. Served in the Continental Army from Charlotte County, NY (now Washington County).
