Baseball pioneer. Joined the New York Knickerbockers shortly after its formation in 1845, was later president of the baseball club. He helped formulate the rules of the modern game, and is said to have invented the shortstop position. He also served as chairman of the rules committee of the governing body of baseball in the 1850's (the National Association of Baseball Players).
He resigned from active membership the baseball organization in 1862. Dr. Adams was thereafter a prominent resident of Ridgefield, Connecticut, before later moving to New Haven in 1888.
Many baseball historians consider Doc one of the "Fathers of Baseball."
Adams was included on the 2022 ballot (for early players and pioneers) for election into Baseball's Hall of Fame. He obtained 10 of the 12 votes he needed. He will be included on the next ballot for election in 2025.
