1882-09-15; Paper: Philadelphia Inquirer "Dr. David Burpee, aged fifty-six years, died yesterday at his residence, No. 1332 Arch street after a long illness. He was a native of Sheffield, province of New Brunswick, Canada, and was educated at the Wesleyan Academy in that province. He studied medicine at St. John, and graduated in 1851 from the Pennsylvania Medical College. In 1859 he removed to this city, where he has since resided. IN 1862 he was appointed surgeon of the United States Hospital in this city, and in the same year was surgeon-in-chief of the Race street Hospital, which he opened. He was for several years a surgeon of Howard Hospital, and was a valuable contributor to medical literature. He married a daughter of Dr. Washington L. Atlee. The cause of his death was Addison's disease, the effect of which is to turn the skin to the color of bronze."
