Dr. Kirkham's 53 year civilian career in medicine spanned much of the globe, and included private practice, Public Health Service, and years with both the U.S. Veterans Administration, and New York State.

Trained as a specialist in tropical medicine, he served in the Pacific Theater in World War II and was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict.

Dr. and Mrs. Kirkham enjoyed 27 years of retirement on Vinalhaven where he was active in the Masons, the VFW, and the Union Church.

They traveled extensively to Japan, India, Africa, Morocco, Greece, Kenya, and Europe.

An avid outdoorsman, he delighted in working in the woods, and the gardens, and taking his grandchildren, and friends, out mackerel fishing.
