About Dr. Enoch Townsend
Enoch Wright Townsend, M.D., left home at age 17 to study medicine with Dr. John. Goucher, who was married to his older sister, Eleanor, in Waynesburg, PA. He graduated from Eclectic Medical Institute, Cincinnati, in 1851. Dr. Townsend practiced allopathy (conventional medicine), then received a degree from the Western College of Homeopathic Medicine, Cleveland, in 1853. He established his practice in Warren, OH, combining both disciplines as well as introducing homeopathic treatments. After nine years, he relocated to Greensburg, Westmoreland County, PA in 1863.
In 1864, Dr. Townsend was appointed as examining surgeon for pensions under President Abraham Lincoln's administration during the Civil War. On November 1, 1893, he died suddenly while sitting in his office chair.
