About Elijah Townsend
A wealthy land owner who owned a number of farms in addition to the homestead tract of 400 acres that he inherited from his father. An avid reader - he was self-educated with many interests and became a highly respected Peters Township Justice of the Peace for 21 years. His advice and counsel were often sought in the settlement of disputes among neighbors. No successful appeal was ever made in disagreement with any of his decisions. At first a Democrat, in later years became identified with the Republican party. He previously served as an officer in the War of 1812
