Wertham, Fredric (20 March 1895–18 November 1981), psychiatrist, was born Fredric Wertheimer in Nuremberg (some sources state Munich), Germany, the son of Sigmund Wertheimer, a businessman, and Mathilde Wertheimer, whose maiden name is unknown. Growing up in a prosperous, assimilated Jewish family, Wertham traveled frequently to England, where he had relatives. Having entered medical school at King's College of London University when World War I broke out, he was briefly interned for being a German citizen. Released in 1914, he remained in England until the war's end in 1918. Then he returned to Germany and studied at the Universities of Erlangen, Munich, and Würzburg, from which he received an M.D. in 1921, and did postgraduate work in psychiatry in London, Paris, and Vienna. Soon after receiving his medical degree he took a position at the Munich clinic of Emil Kraepelin, a prominent psychologist who did pioneering research on the influence of social and economic environment on mental disorders. In 1922, after less than a year with Kraepelin, Wertham accepted an invitation to the United States from Dr. Kraepelin's protégé Alfred Meyer to work at Worcester State Hospital in Massachusetts. He soon moved to the Phipps Psychiatric Clinic at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland....
