About Dr. Henry Childs Ledyard
Dr. Henry Childs Ledyard was a descendant of John Ledyard of Groton, Connecticut, a noted traveller and explorer. Inheriting somewhat of his ancestor's spirit, he went to the Orient after his marriage and spent ten years in the practice of his profession of dentistry, first in Shanghai and then in Constantinople. Returning to California he began work in Los Angeles; but was soon taken away, one of the first victims of La Grippe in that city. He died February 27, 1890.
Dr. Ledyard married in 1879 to Elizabeth, daughter of Dr. Benjamin Cory and Sarah Ann Braly of San Jose, California. There were three children born to this couple:
- Harry Horatio Ledyard, b. December 25, 1880 in Shanghai, China (m. June, 1910, to Lillian Frazee)
- Cory Childs Ledyard, b. in Constantinople, Turkey (m. same day in June, 1910, as his brother, Harry, to Alice Rankin)
- Maritza Ledyard, b. in Constantinople, Turkey (an unmarried teacher in Los Angeles, as of 1913)
